What’s the Idea?

by Matt B. on February 4, 2010

In a piece for The New Republic last month, Jonathan Chait argues that while many in the Republican Party staunchly oppose President Obama’s approaches to three of America’s biggest challenges, (health care, the economy, and climate change) they haven’t offered much in the way of serious alternatives.

I’m not as comfortable as Chait seems to be in ascribing political motives to some of the GOP’s maneuvers this year.  That said, I am struck by what feels like a real thread of truth here; I consider myself at least semi-informed about these topics, and I have no idea what kinds of meaningful solutions the current Republican leadership would bring to bear on these three issues.

Why not?  I don’t confine myself to particularly partisan media, and even if Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were preventing Republican ideas from getting consideration in Congress, there’s nothing preventing Republicans from participating in a larger public conversation.
